History
Avast was started in 1988 by Pavel Baudiš and Eduard Kucera at Czech technical
university.
In 1997, ALWIL Software licensed the Avast
antivirus engine to McAfee for use in its own line of McAfee Virus Scan
antivirus products. Within the
next seven years, the company reached the 1 million user mark for its Avast
product, following the launch of a free antivirus solution for home
(non-commercial) use in 2001.
Now it has more than 500 employees.
